Aural Presence: Listening to Life Unfolding

Keynote speaker
Digital and Technological Performativities, International Colloquium
University of Aveiro, Department of Communication and Art. November 5th and 6th, 2025

Abstract
From resonant ecologies to restorative listening – this presentation addresses artistic experiments where acoustic agency of invisible threads, through which life and relational processes unfold, seeks to create conditions for collective attunement, a sense of belonging and care. While issues of dissociation from reality arise with digital media, the creative use of audio technology has the potential to open up closer encounters to other species and engage profound experiences of environmental sound and places. From practice-based research on spatial sound and ecoacoustics, I will present different approaches in creating and experiencing with sound and vibration, audible and inaudible, mediated by technologies. In installation, performance, soundwalk or composition works – the physical experience of the sounds of life as resonant vital mater has the power to restore our ability to listen, to be receptive and to feel interconnected, into presence, participation and engagement with our environment.

As part of the activities developed by INET-md (Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance/ Portugal), the thematic line Digital an Technological Performativities aims to prospectively explore intersections between artistic creation, digital and technological innovation, and performative practices in different educational, social and cultural contexts. With a critical and interdisciplinary approach, this thematic line emerges from the collaboration of researchers from diverse backgrounds in Music and Dance, seeking to critically reflect on the growing role of technology in shaping identities, realities, and meanings in contemporary societies. It also intends to foster artistic practices, educational projects, and research initiatives that highlight the transformative impact of technological and digital tools in expanding creative boundaries and challenging conventional and institutionalized forms of artistic production and educational processes.
